Sci-Fi Weapons

Sci-Fi Weapons

Blasters, lasers, pulse rifles, phasers, and death rays, everyone loves science fiction weaponry.

Captain Kirk and the original series Phaser rifle. It looks like a pulp fiction cover, but it goes well with the velour uniform.

Harrison Ford carried this futuristic pistol in Blade Runner. The original movie prop recently sold for $270,000 at auction.
The pulse rifle from Aliens has almost become a standard in movie props and sci-fi literature. The best part is you can buy one online for around $300.
Will Smith's weapon of "choice" the noisy cricket from Men in Black.
Mal's pistol from Firefly added old West charm.
Six men came to kill me one time, and the best of them carried this. It's a Callahan Full-bore Auto-lock. Customized trigger, double cartridge, thorough gauge. It is my very favorite gun I call it Vera
District Nine had its own style of alien weapons.
Harrison Ford mixed old and new in his modified broomhandle from Star Wars.
If you have a bug problem, a Morita MKII might come in handy. From Starship Troopers.
The ZF-1 contains a machine gun, rocket launcher, poison arrow launcher, net launcher, flamethrower, and freeze ray. What more could you want? From the Fifth Element.
Start your own collection.
The gaming world is inspiring a long list of new small arms as well. THe following examples are of existing game weapons and concept weapons.

HALO 4 Covenant Concussion Rifle
Mass Effect Cerberus Raptor sniper.
Krogan Graal shotgun
Yakuza Blaster.

The Science in Lunar Contact

The Science Behind the Novel

Graphene
Graphene is a substance made of pure carbon atoms in a honeycomb lattice, one atom thick. Graphene can be rolled into a tubular shape, called carbon nanotubes. Graphene is one of the strongest materials ever discovered, 200 times stronger than steel. A one square meter sheet of graphene would support a cat and weigh only as much as one of the cat’s whiskers.
An interesting characteristic of graphene is its ability to “heal.” When carbon atoms are knocked out of place or separated, the holes in the sheet will self-repair if exposed to free carbon atoms.
Graphene has been proposed as an ideal material for fabrication of integrated circuits, transistors, and capacitors.
Our understanding of the potentials of graphene and its production on industrial scales is still in its infancy. Graphene would seem to be an ideal material for hull material on space ships and also as a material for personal armor. Intelligent sensors could possibly be built into the material. This is why I selected it as the material used by the Ancient Ones in the novel. It is also the reason Dr. Tanakai uses it. Of course Dr. Tanakai is using the information already found in the ship’s computers to construct armor and such.

Space ship design is fundamental to these pics from sci-fi artists.
